Saint John Vianney
Saint John Vianney was a kind and holy priest who lived in France more than 200 years ago. He was born in 1786, at a time when it was dangerous to be a priest. As a boy, John loved God very much, but school was hard for him, especially learning Latin. Even so, he did not give up, because he knew God was calling him to be a priest.
John became a priest in 1815. A few years later, he was sent to a very small village called Ars. The people there had almost forgotten about God. Father John prayed, worked hard, and showed everyone God’s love by being patient and kind.
Father John loved Jesus in the Eucharist and spent many hours praying in church. He was especially known for listening to people’s confessions. People traveled from far away because they knew he would help them find God’s forgiveness. Sometimes he listened to confessions for many hours each day.
Saint John Vianney lived simply, shared what he had with the poor, and trusted God in everything. He died in 1859. Today, he is known as the patron saint of parish priests, and he reminds us that loving God and helping others is more important than being smart or famous.
